CONDITIONS WE TREAT

Elderly foot care

Feet work hard for a lifetime. As we age, skin gets thinner and drier, nails can thicken, joints stiffen and balance can change. Small issues can quickly become painful or limit your confidence to get out and about. Our elderly foot care service provides gentle, regular maintenance and clinical checks so you can keep doing the things you love.

Routine foot care for the older people or elderly foot care focuses on keeping you comfortable, safe and mobile by treating hard skin and thick nails, monitoring circulation and sensation, reducing falls risk and spotting issues early. Ageing feet often develop problems like corns, calluses, cracked heels, fungal nails, bunions and reduced flexibility. Professional podiatry helps you stay active and independent with regular maintenance, tailored footwear advice and a prevention plan.

Spot the signs

Does this sound like you?

You find it difficult to trim your own nails or reach your feet safely.

Hard skin, corns or cracked heels make walking uncomfortable.

Your nails are thick, misshapen or discoloured.

You feel less steady on your feet or worry about falls.

Footwear that used to fit now rubs or feels tight.

You have medical conditions such as arthritis, diabetes or poor circulation and want a professional to keep an eye on your feet.

What we do at your appointment

  • History and checks. We review medical history, medications and foot concerns, then assess skin, nails, circulation and sensation.
  • Gentle treatment. Nail cutting and thinning, corn and callus reduction, cracked heel care, and management of ingrown or fungal nails.
  • Footwear and orthoses. Practical advice on fit, fastenings, cushioning and stability. We can recommend insoles if helpful.
  • Falls risk support. Simple balance tips, pacing guidance and when to consider a strength and balance class.
  • Ongoing plan. How often to return, what to monitor, and when to call sooner. With your consent we can share a brief note with your GP or carer if needed.
  • Home visits. If getting to clinic is difficult, ask about domiciliary appointments in your area.
What you can do at home

Self-care and prevention

Moisturise daily with a urea-based cream, especially heels.

Check feet regularly or ask a partner or carer to help. Look for redness, breaks in the skin, swelling or fluid.

Wear supportive footwear with a secure fastening, cushioned sole and a wide, deep toe box. Avoid slippers that slip off.

Change socks daily and keep feet dry, especially between toes.

Trim nails straight across if you can do so safely. If not, book routine care.

Keep moving within comfort. Gentle ankle circles, seated heel raises and short walks help circulation and balance.

Know red flags. New wounds, spreading redness, sudden colour change, severe pain or loss of feeling need prompt professional advice.

When to seek urgent help

A new or worsening wound, signs of infection such as heat, swelling or discharge, sudden severe foot pain, toes turning very pale, blue or very red, or a foot that feels cold compared with the other. Call your GP, NHS 111 or emergency services as appropriate.
